This curious volume published two years after The Shadow of Z Franquin and indicates that is the end of his run on Spirou: indeed, he devoted himself increasingly to his creation GastonLagaffe , with whom he can develop his knowledge of the gag in a page after Modeste and Pompon and evolve its design in a more nervous, guns away "school of Marcinelle. Thus he realized two more volumes of Spirou ( QRN On Bretzelburg and Panade to Champignac ), I chose not to criticize because I do not like them ( QRN ... is pretty good but not commensurate with what has preceded, and Panade ... is a true devastation of the series, I've never forgiven Franquin). In short, the golden age of the run Franquin's Spirou on is long gone.
Both stories were written by Franquin with Roba, creator of Boule and Bill (who also appear in a scene), and were compiled in an album without having been originally designed for it. The shape of the book recalls the miserable memories of Volumes 1 and 3, with its collection of mini-stories co-signed with Jijé .
However, scenarios are much more mature than Four Adventures of Spirou and Fantasio and The Black Hats setting out for the first elements of a classic like The Lair of the Moray . The second plot flirts with fantasy and anxiety, which types will be revisited by that Tome and Janry much later, and is effective and energetic.
Graphically, Franquin also collaborates with Roba, with whom he seems to have divided the work well, reserving the drawing of characters and scenery and leaving his partner inking luxury. The outcome is also resulted in the time of his association with Jidéhem , but implementation has not aged in color (maybe that was it corrected when printing full ...).
However, it is not (more) up to the summits of the series: it's still nice but the genie is back in the bottle - or was released into the pages of Gaston, in a very different register zany.
From Franquin's own admission, he should have left the series after the diptych of "Z" must welcome this insight and stop there in terms of his run on Spirou.

A minor opus: the end of a great adventure.
