In the beginning there is the love of God, Compassion for
this city of pagan
God is reluctant to destroy a city full of men, women and children who do not even know about. As the hymn says
of Zechariah we say each morning Lauds: "It is the work of the heart of our God"
So he sends his prophet Jonah.
Jonas brackets shows a lot of ill will.
God must persuade him that he finally decides to cross the city, shouting: "Repent or you will be reduced to dust."
Finally, God must touch the heart of men, sinners, to repentance and live.
This prophetic gesture accomplished now with Jesus to the earth.
In Jesus, God now invites all peoples to turn to him.
Through the voice of his disciples, by your voice, it makes everyone know that the kingdom is at hand.
Let us not be defeatist before the world far from God. It is God who converts people, not us.
But we entrust the mission with determination to testify
by our words, with our faces, our actions by sharing
Amen.
